Vote on Values, Bet on Biology: How Futarchy Aligns with OmOrenda.space
When we look at the systemic issues plaguing modern society—from the mental health crisis of remote work to the ecological strain of our housing infrastructure—it becomes clear that our current methods of problem-solving are flawed. We are trapped in cycles of cognitive bias, both at the individual and the societal level.
But what if we could design a system that mathematically optimizes for human flourishing? Enter Futarchy.
What is Futarchy?
Proposed by George Mason University economist Robin Hanson in 2000, Futarchy is a theoretical form of governance based on a simple, radical motto: “Vote on values, but bet on beliefs.”
In a Futarchy, society democratically votes on what the ultimate goals (or “values”) should be—for example, maximizing national healthspan, improving gross domestic happiness, or reducing carbon emissions. However, instead of electing politicians to guess which policies will achieve those goals, the system uses prediction markets to determine the path forward. People literally bet money on whether a specific policy will move the needle toward the defined goal. Because prediction markets historically bypass human political biases to find the objective truth, the policy that the market predicts will be most successful is automatically enacted.
It is a system that strips away performative politics and optimizes purely for measurable outcomes.
The OmOrenda Connection: Optimizing for Human Flourishing
At OmOrenda.space, our core philosophy is about optimizing the human experience—leveraging salutogenic architecture, circadian alignment, and nervous system regulation (like Yoga Nidra) to extend healthspan and cognitive agency.
Futarchy and OmOrenda are incredibly complementary concepts, operating at different scales. While Futarchy optimizes the macro-system of society, OmOrenda optimizes the micro-system of the individual habitat.
1. Bypassing Cognitive Bias
As we explored recently, our brains are hardwired with cognitive biases (like salience bias and loss aversion) that algorithms and politicians exploit to keep us reactive. Futarchy neutralizes these biases at the governance level by forcing people to put their money where their mouth is (the prediction market). OmOrenda neutralizes these biases at the biological level using Yoga Nidra and biophilic design to pull the brain out of the reactive “fight-or-flight” state and into the “edit mode” of the parasympathetic nervous system.
2. The Metrics of Wellbeing
If a society were to adopt Futarchy today, what would we vote to optimize? The metrics would likely be healthspan, mental clarity, and environmental sustainability. Once those values are set, the prediction markets would rapidly select for the very things OmOrenda advocates. Policies promoting off-grid, self-sufficient Earthship homes and health-generating salutogenic architecture would inevitably win out, because the data proves they actively heal the human body and mind.
3. Radical Autonomy
Futarchy decentralizes truth-finding, moving it away from concentrated political power and into the hands of a distributed market of beliefs. Similarly, OmOrenda and EarthSpace architecture decentralize living. By harvesting our own water, generating our own solar power, and regulating our own nervous systems, we remove our dependency on fragile, centralized grids.
A Data-Driven Future
Futarchy asks us to envision a world where we stop arguing over how to solve our problems, and instead let data and human ingenuity find the most efficient route to our chosen values. If our ultimate value is true human flourishing, a Futarchic system would naturally architect a world that looks very much like the vision of OmOrenda.space—a world where our environments nurture us, our minds are clear, and our biology is optimized for a long, vibrant life.
